It has gotten to a point where I would really like to upgrade my iOS and feel like I need to go get the most out of my computer. Not only do I not want to buy a new scanner but I don't think there is one at this price point that will do what I need it to do. We have lots of 35mm slides and this scanner handles them beautifully allowing me to manipulate the scanning and customize each slide. Anyway, we have an Epson 4490 Photo that has been wonderful. I'm not that savvy either but am way ahead of him. My husband is a artist and NOT technically savvy.

It may be that Epson's original software knows these limts whereas Image Capture does not. If your scanner only supports, say, 600 DPI then don't try to scan something at 2,400 DPI because the results won't be pleasing. It's also important to know the limitations of your scanner. Without knowing your source material it's impossible to say more than just experiment. For example, text often scans better at medium resolution in greyscale/black & white whereas photos may benefit from higher resolutions and color. Different source documents work better with different settings.
